Vote NO to the Coogee Diggers amalgamation

For nearly 70 years, the Paddo RSL has been a home for veterans, families and the wider community. It’s where we gather, remember, celebrate, and belong. But a proposal is now on the table that would transfer our club — including its $20+ million property that's been paid for and operated by members of the local community since 1956 — to Coogee Diggers Ltd, a for-profit company.
*Artist representation of development risk

With limited protections in the contract to maintain the community spaces, Coogee Diggers Ltd could on-sell it to developers within a few years or less — and we’d have no power to stop it.

Why other members are voting: NO

1. Risk of Closure & Redevelopment: fine print on this deal could mean the loss of community space for everyone – our veterans, families, schools and arts. This is a land-grab.
2. Misinformation, Lack of Transparency: true value of property transfer was not disclosed to members to inform their votes. Paddo RSL is not insolvent, doesn’t need to close, and doesn’t need to give its assets away to refurbish. There are other options.
3. No Alternatives Considered: other RSL’s offered support. Transfer of property out of local community management is not necessary to refurbish it.

Wider support for the NO VOTE

"There’s a bit of tension brewing between a number of RSL clubs in Sydney’s eastern suburbs at the moment. It has to do with one club’s plan to merge with another, but a third party says it’s not a good idea."
2GB
"A proposed amalgamation between two popular RSL clubs in elite Sydney suburbs has been labelled an “asset grab” for a vastly undervalued property on the eve of a member vote this weekend."
The Sydney Morning Herald
